I recently traveled to Antarctica on the Ocean Albatros to celebrate my friend’s 50th birthday. We went on a twelve-day voyage with Polar Latitudes Expeditions, called Encounter the Antarctic Circle, from February 28 to March 11. We picked this trip because we wanted to cross the Antarctic Circle at 66 degrees south, which you can only do later in the season when there’s less ice. March is the last month of the tourist season before the ice comes back and the region has 24 hours of darkness. In winter, Antarctica’s landmass grows by 50% because of the ice.
If you’ve already booked your trip to Antarctica, or if you’re just curious about what it’s like, I’ve put together everything you need to know about an expedition to Antarctica.
Itinerary
Before the cruise, people kept telling me to stay flexible, and they were right. Each evening, we got the plan for the next day, but not a single day went exactly as scheduled.
We were lucky with the weather—it was sunny most days, and the usually rough Drake Passage was calm. The conditions were so good that we traveled farther south than many of the staff had ever gone. In fact, it was the farthest our boat and captain had ever been. We made it to 68 degrees south.

Frequently Asked Questions
Option 1: Most people travel to Antarctica by taking an expedition boat from Ushuaia, Argentina. These boats usually carry fewer than 200 people and are built to handle ice and narrow passages in remote places. The trip from Ushuaia to Antarctica takes about two days through the Drake Passage. The Drake Passage is known as the roughest sea in the world since the Atlantic, Pacific, and Southern Oceans all meet there. We were lucky and got the calm “Drake Lake,” instead of the infamous “Drake Shake.”
Option 2: If you’re worried about crossing the Drake Passage and have an extra $20,000, you can fly from Argentina to King George Island and then board your expedition boat.
Option 3: Another, less common option is to take a boat from New Zealand. This route goes to the east side of Antarctica, but the journey takes seven days at sea.
No. Antarctica only has a few research stations. Unless your cruise offers camping on the ice, you’ll sleep on the boat.
If the weather is good, you’ll usually have two excursions a day. You’ll board a Zodiac boat to explore both the water and the land. Depending on the season, your cruise might offer one night of camping in Antarctica, where you sleep in a bag without a tent. There’s also kayaking for an extra fee, the famous polar plunge, and some tours even offer skiing. Check out Life Onboard and the Drake Passage for more information.
Some expeditions let you fly from King George Island to the South Pole, where you stay at a camp. These trips start at $60,000.
We were on a boat with international ice swimmers. It’s just as intense as it sounds.
Ice swimming means swimming in water that’s 5.0°C (41.0°F) with no help—just a silicone cap, goggles, and a regular swimsuit. No wetsuits allowed! The swimmers on our boat swam up to a mile in the freezing Antarctic water.
Even though Coca-Cola ads show polar bears and penguins together, polar bears do not live in Antarctica. Polar bears are only found in the Arctic (North Pole), while penguins are only found in Antarctica (South Pole).

You can’t book directly with the boat. You have to go through a travel agent. We used Swoop, and our boat was the Ocean Albatros.
It’s not easy to find someone willing to spend their savings and risk seasickness just to see a penguin. The fact that five of my friends said “fuck it” shows the kind of crazy people I hang out with. But what if you don’t have friends like that?
Cruises aren’t usually single-friendly because you have to pay for the whole room, not per person. I was surprised that most guests came by themselves. Several tour operators offer to pair you with another solo traveler.
You can get internet throughout the ship with a Starlink satellite connection, but it’s expensive. Here are the data packages you can buy:
500 MB – Complimentary
10 GB – USD $50
20 GB – USD $85
